Fall 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to out Autumn Mental Health Newsletter!

As the leaves change colors and the temperatures drop, we find ourselves transitioning into the beautiful season of Fall. While this season may bring a sense of coziness to some, for many, it brings a time od schedule changes and returning to a more stressful academic and family life. Transitions can be difficult and talking through these challenges with a skilled provider can help. Conventions Health also offers diagnostic evaluations and treatment planning for mental health concerns. We have the most innovative treatment options, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Spravato (esketamine nasal spray), and clinical research trials.

October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month

Depression affects an estimated 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. alone according to John Hopkins Medicine. It is important this month and every month to check on your friends and family. Reach out to others and find the support you need.

Mindful Moment

Fall is an excellent time to practice mindfulness and gratitude. Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, take a few moments each day to practice mindfulness. Exercises such as mindful breathing, meditation, and yoga can help ground you and alleviate stress. Reflect on the things you are thankful for. Remember to prioritize self care and set aside time for relaxation. These simple practices can improve your overall outlook on life and enhance your sense of well being.

Group Therapy

Men's Recovery Group

Men’s Recovery Group has been facilitated for 16 years by Eric Mueller, CADC, LCSW, and it for men aged 21+ to provide hope, support, and recovery from compulsive behaviors. Group members have anywhere from several weeks to several years of recovery. This is not a 12-step meeting and all that is asked is that you abstain from behaviors on the day of the group.

Men’s Group can be used as an aftercare component of a discharge plan from primary treatment. It can also be part of a return-to-work agreement.

A Look into:

According to Collegedata.com, almost 30% of college freshmen surveyed reported that the rigor of academics was the most difficult part of transitioning into college, followed by the daunting task of money management. Nearly 40% of those surveyed considered dropping out after their first year because of those two challenges. Following the isolation of COVID, another stressor was making and maintaining new friendships.

You can help support your new college freshman with the following tips:

1. Be available to talk when they need it.

2. Listen – to empathize with them, not to solve their problem.

3. Offer advice, but only if it’s asked for.

4. Encourage your student to utilize resources, like talking with their Resident Assistant, seeking out tutoring or other services offered.

5. Send a care package.

6. Normalize mental health treatment and encourage them to seek it out.

Conventions Health offers virtual appointments and will accommodate your student’s academic schedule. Encourage them to schedule a therapy session or a psychiatric evaluation to help them manage their mental health during this transitional time. Our therapists can help parents adjust to the transition as well!
