Frequently Asked Questions

Psychiatrists treat mental health conditions with medications. They are specifically trained in psychopharmacology. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are also well-qualified to treat mental illness and prescribe medication.

Psychotherapists typically do “talk therapy” and are not usually licensed to prescribe medications. Psychotherapists are trained in a number of different treatment modalities from cognitive behavioral therapy to hypnosis, etc. Please read more about the different options for treatment under “Treatments” and check out our Therapists section to find the best fit for you.

Best practices indicate that mental health treatment is most effective with a combination of medications and psychotherapy.

Our team of providers are accepting new patients. Most new patients can be seen within a week for either psychiatric or therapy services.

Conventions Psychiatry & Counseling accepts most private insurance plans and Medicare. We recommend that you check your benefits prior to your first visit. This way you will have an understanding of your co-pay, deductible, pre-authorization, and number of visits authorized. Contact Us or call our office at 630-416-8289 for more information.

At this time, we are not accepting self-pay patients.

Conventions Psychiatry & Counseling has a provider for every age group, including children to geriatrics.

Please click on Schedule Visit and someone from our Intake Department will reach out to you at the number you provide or call 630-416-8289 to speak to a staff member who will guide you to our intake specialist. When speaking with our intake specialist, you’ll need to provide your demographic information and insurance information listed on your insurance card. You will then be provided with instructions for completing the initial paperwork once you are entered in our system.

Conventions Psychiatry & Counseling offers virtual/tele-health appointments for your safety and comfort.

A list of your past and current medications and/or treatment history is helpful. For care coordination, it is helpful to have the information of your other providers, so we may contact them if necessary (with your prior written authorization).

Your initial psychiatry visit will be approximately 40 minutes. Your initial therapy visit will be approximately 50 minutes.

Both psychiatrists and therapists will likely complete a BioPsychoSocial Assessment. This tool is used to gather information about a patient’s history, symptoms, medical issues, stressors and other relevant information.

A Psychiatrist will place specific emphasis on learning about your mental health symptoms, in order to prescribe the most appropriate medication to target the dysfunction in the brain’s chemistry.

A Psychotherapist will want to learn about your history and current issues. They will be curious to hear about the coping mechanisms you’ve used to manage your symptoms and stress, and may discuss alternative ways to help you cope. They may help guide you through the resolution of past trauma. They may help you to overcome debilitating panic attacks. They may coach you on parenting skills or couples’ communication. Our psychotherapists each have different training and can address nearly any issue with their unique style and approach.
